Introduction to Raptor Ridge Lodge
Raptor Ridge is situated approximately 8.5 km off the N1 exactly halfway between Johannesburg and Cape Town, on the Free State side of the Gariep Dam. The property borders the Gariep Nature Reserve and is set on an open plain with a unique sense of space, freedom and unity with nature. To put it in the words of Dr Ledger as published in "African Pilot" - "A Raptor Roost for Gariep Pilots"... "The sky here seems endless, cloud formations stretch from horizon to horizon and the sun gives more often than not spectacular shows."
The mountain ridges on the Northern Side are used by many species of raptors to ride updrafts and soar to great heights. Black eagles patrol the highest peak called Aasvoëlkop, and the fish eagles that breed close to the water are flying over the lodge calling loudly.
Raptor Ridge overlooks the Gariep Dam which is the largest fresh water expanse in South Africa. The dam with its shoreline of 435 km is situated on the Orange River. Raptor Ridge offers the perfect setting to escape the rat race of modern society.
Apart from just relaxing and enjoying the view over the Gariep Dam and stretched out plains as well as gazing at the stars under the open Karoo sky. Delightful meals are also thoroughly enjoyed in our main lodge with a fireplace to cater for those cold winter evenings.
There are numerous other activities that could be engaged upon, such as game viewing, bird watching and special picnics to be enjoyed in the picturesque area.
